Item Details
Location:
Morat, district Bern, Switzerland
Date:
circa 1807
Description:
A wonderful European example of a rare textile mourning memorial picture. The picture is a tour-de-force of multimedia: painting, silk cutting, traditional embroidery, as well as a stumpwork technique in the lower foreground. The young lady's face, hair, arm and hand are painted in watercolor, as is the surrounding background. There is cut silk forming the leaves of the trees, while the tombstone, dress, willow tree and flower bush were formed with traditional embroidery techniques. The picture is mounted securely onto the original mahogany backing frame, while the main oval frame is also original. The textile is protected by the recent installation of acrylite conservation UV clear: this high-grade plexiglass blocks out virtually all UV and resists breaking. The picture was found hanging in a dark room on the wall of a Swiss manour near Morat (Murten) in the district of Bern. On the back of the frame, there is an handwritten poem in German about a young baby who died in the year of it's birth. The picture is signed on the lower front by a woman who's married name was "Wyttenbach", but born "Plüss". Alongside this information is the date "1807". The condition is very good, with the colours obviously as vivid as the day the picture was first created; there is some slight small, difficult-to-notice damage near the young lady's feet. The frame is in good condition, with some cracks and some surface paint loss. Frame outer dimensions are 26"x 22", while the picture itself is 18"x21".
