A silk tapestry uchishiki for Buddhist altar. This textile depicts the theme "Seven Sages in the Bamboo Grove": a story that has a long history in both Chinese and Japanese art. Part fact and part legend, the seven sages were Taoists supposedly endowed with supernatural powers. A Taoist theme on a Buddhist altar cloth?: perhaps, as the Japanese did mix freely Buddhism, Taoism and Shintoism. Fair condition, with various parts of destruction in the black due to the mordant used. 25" x 25" along sides.
