Item Details
Location:
Japan
Date:
Early Showa period (1927-1940)
Description:
A fine silk rinzu kimono featuring shibori (tie-dye) bamboo motifs. Very good condition save for a tiny hole in the left sleeve. 50" from sleeve-end to sleeve-end x 59" height. The bamboo has admirable connotations among the Japanese. It is known as one of the "three companions of winter', and its endurance throughout all seasons has caused it to be associated with such virtues as constancy, integrity, and honour. The wide dark red vertical stripes that form a background likely refer to bamboo stalks, an artistic way of subtlety linking these to the large yellow bamboo leaves in the foreground.
