Item Details
Latter Edo (1800-1850)
A silk gift cloth featuring a two-tone metallic thread couching making up the large central family crest, on a single color brocade background. Tassels are unusually refined. Excellent condition. 25" x 29". The large central crest depicts a pair of chrysanthemum leaves: the chrysanthemum motif found fairly wide use as a family emblem in Japan, as it was auspicious and beautiful. The chrysanthemum flowers resemblance to the sun led it to be called by alternative names such as 'sun splendour' and 'sun spirit', and has also been associated with long life.
