Item Details
latter Edo (1800-1850)
An embroidered silk mon applique on fine wool twill fragment. The fragment was cut from a very damaged samurai jacket: see 2500a and 2500c for other fragments from the same jacket. The family crest represents the zingiber, specifically the leaf of the ginger myoga. Myoga is an auspicious pun for both the myoga ginger and the meaning 'divine protection. Also, during Edo times the zingiber crest was associated with particular Buddhist gods and temples. Very good condition, with a few tiny holes in the backing wool twill cloth. Fragment measures 14" x 14", the crest itself 4.5" x 4.5"
