late Edo (1825-1868)
A velvet-like cotton flannel Kabuki costume jacket that was likely worn by the actor posing as a samurai. The flamboyant uses of color as well as the bold design demonstrate the decadent beauty characteristic of the late Edo period. The hawk and other motifs are appliques that contain much metallic embroidery. The condition is good: there are many small imperfections, including the loss of the hawk's glass eye. 52" from sleeve-end to sleeve-end x 39" height.
