A sheer, unlined silk summer kimono featuring white, blue and yellow paper fan motifs created from coated metallic threads. Very good condition, with minor imperfections. 49" from sleeve-end to sleeve-end x 58" height. In Japan, fans are often given as gifts to honour births or birthdays, and these fans are often covered in floral designs. The fans in this kimono are decorated with carnations and the Japanese bellflower. The bellflower is a symbol of unchanging love, honesty and obedience, while carnations are associated represent love. Summer kimonos tend to be more experimental in artwork than other kimonos, and this example follows that generalization: the fan motifs are formed into unusual pampa-grass shapes, and spaced and arranged in a unique and elegant manner.
