This elegant fukusa (gift cover) is a rare survivor from the late Edo period (1775–1825), representing the height of Japanese textile gift-giving etiquette. The piece features a pair of exquisitely embroidered cranes—symbols of longevity and marital fidelity—rendered in fine silk and metallic couching against an exceptionally delicate black silk backdrop.
As an early example of its kind, this fukusa features the characteristic "wispy" threads at its corners, a stylistic precursor to the more elaborate tassels found on later 19th-century iterations. Measuring 23 inches by 24 inches (58.5 cm x 61 cm), it remains in very good condition. While the front remains vibrant, there is minor fraying on the black embroidery and signs of age-related deterioration on the backside lining, which is expected for a silk textile of this vintage.
