This cotton warp-ikat selendang originates from Savu and was crafted by the greater Blossom clan, as documented in Fig 104 of 'Traditional Indonesian Textiles' by John Gillow. Renowned for its superior weaving, this textile boasts a luxurious and even handle. Notably, a section of the pattern appears to feature a woven date resembling '1328', potentially referring to a date in the Hijri (Islamic) calendar that corresponds to the year 1910 in the Gregorian calendar.
Savu, remaining largely isolated from the outside world until around 1860, lends a sense of historical context to this piece. The colors incorporated include indigo alongside natural dyes in shades of blue, red, pink, and rust. Despite its age, the selendang remains in excellent condition, with the exception of a 1cm hole toward one end. Its measurements are 40 inches (101 cm) in width and 63 inches (160 cm) in length.
